The Centro de Lançamento de Alcântara (CLA) is a satellite launch center in Maranhão,
Brazil, operated by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Its location near the equator provides a
significant advantage, reducing fuel costs by up to 30%, making it one of the most
efficient launch sites globally. Because of this, private space companies and experts
consider it an ideal location for rocket launches. However, its expansion has long been
controversial due to its impact on quilombolas, who are Afro-Brazilian communities
descended from escaped slaves who used to work in the Carribean plantations in 18th
and 19th century. These communities have lived in the region for centuries, preserving
distinct cultural and territorial identities
